What You Should Do Before Your IV Therapy Appointment

Whether you want to build strong bones, reduce your blood pressure, or cure a hangover, IV treatments can help you reach your health and wellness goals. At our IV bar in Albuquerque, NM, we offer IV fluids with different vitamins infused to help our clients look and feel their best. Our team at Vessel Longevity & IV Bar shares what you need to know to prepare for your next IV appointment below.

You’ll Undergo a Consultation with IV Medics

Before you begin getting IV treatments, review your medical history, symptoms, and goals with a professionally licensed doctor, nurse, or other medical professional at your IV therapy facility. If the clinic you visit doesn’t have a licensed professional, find a clinic that does.

Most states require at least partial ownership by a licensed physician, so research your state’s laws to determine if a clinic is legitimate before accepting IV therapy treatments.

Drink Water

While you may be visiting the IV clinic for hydration IV treatments, it’s still a good idea to drink a full glass of water within the hour before your appointment. Dehydration can make it harder to find a good vein for your IV therapy, and it can take longer for the IV fluids to disperse into your system if your veins are constricted.

Have a Snack

Some vitamins and minerals can cause nausea if infused while you have nothing on your stomach. Eat something before your appointment. It doesn’t have to be a full meal, just something with substance that contains some protein. You also want a few carbs to stabilize your blood sugar before diluting your blood with IV fluids. If your blood sugar is low before your appointment, it will be lower after.

De-Stress

Some people have a fear of being jabbed with a needle, even after several appointments. Do what you need to relax before your appointment. Take deep breaths, meditate, or go through some of your favorite yoga poses before arriving for your appointment. Remember that the only scary part is the poke, and that you’ll be fine once the needle’s in.

Hold Off on Taking Vasoconstriction Medications

Antihistamines, decongestants, blood pressure medications, and other prescription and over-the-counter drugs can constrict your veins, making it hard to find a vein for your IV treatments. If you can wait until after your appointment to take any vasoconstricting drugs, your phlebotomist will have an easier time, and your body will be better able to absorb the vitamins infused in your formula.

Dress Comfortably

Many IV therapy appointments take about 30-45 minutes, meaning that you’ll be sitting with one arm not moving most of that time. Dress comfortably to be in that position for a while.

Wear layers in case the clinic is cooler or warmer than you prefer. And wear something that gives your nurse or phlebotomist easy access to the crook of your elbow.

Bring a Book or Other Entertainment

If you’re going to be sitting around for half an hour or more, you’re very likely to get bored or anxious if you don’t have something interesting to keep your attention. Some infusions take even longer, especially if you get multiple formulas at once, so be sure to have something on hand that will keep you occupied. Some things you can bring or do include:

  • A book or e-reader
  • Crossword or sudoku puzzles
  • Music and headphones
  • Your work laptop
  • Netflix or another streaming service
  • A drawing pad or tablet
  • Guided meditation
  • Texting your besties to invite them to join you next time
